OpenStreetMap
A free, editable map of the entire world built by a community of mappers and stewarded by the UK-registered OpenStreetMap Foundation. Its open data powers countless privacy-friendly apps - and you can use and contribute to it directly.
Quick facts
It's the map data that many other privacy-friendly apps – Organic Maps, OsmAnd, Magic Earth – actually run on, and you can go in and fix an error yourself rather than waiting for a company to update it.
Data completeness and accuracy vary a lot by region, since it depends entirely on volunteer mapping effort, and there's no official turn-by-turn app – you need a separate one built on the data.
Why does it score 85?
Stewarded by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, registered in the UK – outside the EU/EFTA, which caps the legal score.
Run as a non-profit, community-driven project with no investors or corporate parent.
Servers run on donated hardware based in the UK and EU rather than a commercial cloud.
Fully open source with an open data licence (ODbL) and GDPR-compliant – the map data itself is auditable by anyone.
