European alternatives to Microsoft Copilot
Copilot is Microsoft's generative-AI layer across the whole 365 suite: drafting emails, summarising documents, building slides and writing spreadsheet formulas from a prompt. It's genuinely useful, and it's also switched on by default across apps most people already have open all day — with prompts and business data flowing through Microsoft's cloud to make it work.

Why people switch away from Microsoft Copilot
Trained partly on scraped data
Like other large AI models, the models behind Copilot were built in part on data scraped from the open web, a practice that's drawn copyright lawsuits against Microsoft and OpenAI.
The EU data boundary has gaps
Microsoft's EU Data Boundary keeps most 365 processing in Europe, but third-party models it calls on, including Anthropic's, are explicitly excluded from that in-region guarantee.
Answers to US law
Microsoft is a US company, so Copilot prompts and outputs ultimately sit under the CLOUD Act, whatever regional processing commitments apply on paper.
Everyday annoyances
- On by default, everywhere. Copilot icons and suggestions appear across Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams the moment it's enabled, and switching it off means digging through admin settings most users never see.
- Extra cost on top of 365. Copilot ships as a paid add-on on most plans, stacking on top of an existing Microsoft 365 subscription rather than being included.
- Confidently wrong answers. Like any large language model, Copilot can summarise or generate content that sounds authoritative but is subtly inaccurate — worth checking before it goes in a client email.
- Uneven feature rollout. Which Copilot features actually work depends on your 365 plan, region and even which app you're in, making it hard to know what you're paying for.
- Steep licensing minimums. Enterprise Copilot licensing has carried minimum seat counts in the past, making it impractical for smaller teams to trial.

Why avoid United States-owned services?
CLOUD Act
Forces US companies to hand over data stored anywhere in the world upon government request, including data on European servers.
FISA Section 702
Authorises mass surveillance of non-US persons using data held by US tech platforms, without a warrant or notification.
GDPR vs US law conflict
EU courts have repeatedly found that US surveillance law conflicts with European fundamental rights. Schrems I and II both invalidated EU-US data transfer agreements.
